Fed: Govt should have clarified Korean decoration ALP

The federal opposition says the government should have clarified whether veterans
could wear the Republic of Korea war service medals before the dedication of the Australian
National Korean War Memorial tomorrow.

Opposition defence science and personnel spokesman LAURIE BRERETON has urged the government
to resolve the outstanding issue of the Republic of Korea service medal, which was offered
to all allied countries who contributed to the United nations force in Korea.

In a statement, Mr BRERETON says the government recently restated it view that approval
would not be given to Australian veterans wearing the medal.

He says the government apparently still believes that commonwealth countries never
accepted the November 1951 offer of the medal by the korean authorities.
